WSSD Press Release : Ziyabila Project
Walter Sisulu Square entertains whilst maintaining its spirit of Freedom.
With various developments having happened at Walter Sisulu Square, it was quite fitting for The Square to embark on an entertainment programme that caters for all in Kliptowm and its surrounding areas. The Square will over a period of months be inviting various unknown artists from all genres of music to showcase their talents and be given a platform to go head on, with various known artist around u Mzansi. Local organizations like Amacunda, SKY, Soweto Under Construction, Street Pop, Kwazikhali and many more will be given free usage of The Square to develop talents whilst bringing entertainment to arts and music lovers.
" We look forward to a new wave heating Kliptown and Soweto more than it has done in the past" , so says the team behind the Ziyabila Project, " we are eager to see new talent flocking in, in big numbers to be given an opportunity previously limited to a few. " Artists from all over the continent will be given the opportunity to rub shoulders with the best that South Africa can offer, and it will continue at The Square with the Ziyabila programmes".
"Ziyabila e Kliptown" , safely translated " Its Boiling in Kliptown , Soweto" , is what we expect to see happening in Kliptown, from now till beyond 2010, when the soccer fever hits, we will be boiling already !!! " so says the team.
Commonly known as "The Square", the centre was originally named after Walter Sisulu, who was one of the crucial role players who devoted his life to fighting for freedom for all. "Sisulu stands head and shoulders above all of us in South Africa," Nelson Mandela once said. To pay homage to this great man, The Square is a proud monument to transformation. "We are pleased to be part of Soweto's economic development", states the Ziyabila team enthusiastically. "The programme will be a different yet exciting one , to illustrate what The Walter Sisulu Square stands for, i.e.: entertainment, retail, commercial and heritage. In order to achieve this objective successfully, we had to ensure that the participants and exhibitors encompass all the traits and elements of The Square effectively." Events will range from exhibitions and displays of a variety of proudly African products and goods, to all music genres open to all. The mood will be toned down with Jazz sessions that will take place till late .
Due to its historical value, many people are still unaware of all the extra's that The Square has to offer. "We believe that this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase The Square, as it takes its rightful place in the market. Here you will find the township's highly acclaimed Capello's, The Grill, WASS Art Gallery, a number of Banks and so many more. Walter Sisulu Square "e" Kliptown, has proven to be more than just a Heritage Site- but rather a one-stop commercial and entertainment destination, that caters for a variety of customers," states the Centre's Management Team.
In synergy with this very process of transformation-that lies at the heart of the centre's existence and operations, The Square will soon be launching a brand new Logo and Website which will be updating all on our events and exhibitions calender. The Ziyabila programme hits the market as of the 24th of February with the Street Pop session that will take place from 12h00 am till 18h00pm and will be a must see for all Afro Hip Hop lovers, featuring artist like, Ben Sharpa, Vikiinduku, PRO, Tidal Wave and Ancient Hope . DJ's include: Zakes, Bobotical and Las Born, and Dolla , whist many fashion houses will be represented as well eg, Loxion Kulcha, No Ohdah and Street Pop clothing .
The "Ziyabila e Kliptown" programme team passionately extends an open invitation to the arts, culture and heritage lovers to join in as we celebrate Freedom in a different way at The Square. In just three years, its unbelievable to see how Kliptown has changed and developed, and from what everybody can tell, the "vibe" is still there. It is The Square's intention to keep it just like that for many years to come. With that, we hope to create a sense of belonging for everyone. Viva Walter Sisulu Square. And Viva to Freedom and equality for us all!!
"Sisulu stands head and shoulders above all of us in South Africa," Nelson Mandela has said. "You will ask what is the reason for his elevated status among us. Very simple, it is humility. It is simplicity. Because he pushed all of us forward and remained quietly in the background."
